Smoke breaks
Smoke breaks: how often, how long – and what you can learn
Updated 10/10/2026
For many people the smoke break is a fixed part of the day – at work, after meals or with friends. Looking closer often shows how much time adds up.
Small breaks, a lot of time
Five smoke breaks of seven minutes each are already more than half an hour a day – over a year, more than 200 hours. Seeing the minutes makes that tangible.
Smoke breaks at work
Whether and how smoke breaks are allowed at work depends on your employer and contract. Tracking your breaks lets you honestly see how much work time they take.
Recognise your triggers
Common triggers are coffee, stress, boredom or colleagues heading out. Once you know which situation leads to a break, you can try an alternative – like a short walk or a glass of water.
