What does smoking cost? Yearly costs of cigarettes, hookah & vapes
A few euros here, a few euros there – in everyday life you barely notice what smoking really costs. Added up over a year, it quickly reaches four figures. We did the math for the most common smoking methods.
How we calculated
All figures are example calculations based on typical average prices in Germany. Prices vary by brand, retailer and region, and rise regularly with tobacco tax increases. Best to recalculate with your own prices.
Cigarettes
A pack of 20 cigarettes currently costs around €9 in most cases.
1 pack a day: €9 × 365 = roughly €3,285 per year.
Half a pack a day: about €1,640 per year. Even 5 cigarettes a day add up to more than €800 a year.
Hookah
For a hookah session at home we count tobacco (about 15–20 g) and charcoal – roughly €5 per session in total.
3 sessions a week: €5 × 3 × 52 = about €780 per year, not counting the pipe, bowls and accessories.
In a hookah bar a pipe often costs €15 or more. Once a week that's about €780 per year; twice a week already over €1,500 – drinks not included.
Vapes & disposables
Disposable vapes usually cost around €8. Using one every two days adds up to about €1,460 per year.
Refillable systems are often cheaper: at about €8 per week for pods or liquids that's around €420 per year, plus the device and spare parts.
IQOS & heated tobacco
A pack of tobacco sticks (20 pieces) costs roughly €7. At one pack a day that's about €2,550 per year, plus the device.
What the money could buy instead
€3,285 a year – that's a vacation, a new bike or a solid cushion in your savings account. Over ten years it's more than €30,000, not counting price increases.
On top come costs that are hard to quantify: health consequences, dentist visits, cleaning, or higher premiums with some insurances.
Keep an eye on your own costs
The first step is knowing how much you actually smoke. With Smoke with me you log every session with one tap and see your minutes per day and week. Every smoke-free day you record is real money staying in your pocket.
